The Edmond YMCA Swim Team competes in the Oklahoma YMCA State Swim League. Our team is a great opportunity to be involved in the wonderful sport of swimming, it also is a great introduction to the sport for the beginner swimmers. There are two seasons for this swim league, we compete in a winter season which is from September - March and a summer season which is April - August.
Age: 5-18 years
Qualification: Swimmers must know the 4 basic competitive strokes of Freestyle, Backstroke, Breastroke and Butterfly and be able to swim 1 length of the pool in each stroke.
Practice: We have three 1hr practices a week on Monday, Wednesday, & Friday for ages 11-18yrs practice is from 4-5p, and for ages 10-5yrs practice is from 5-6pm.
Tryouts: To try out simply come to the Y during the appropriate months at the beginning of practice, let the front desk know you are there to try out for the swim team. The swimmer will be asked to swim each of the four competitive strokes 1 length at a time with necessary rest at the end of each length. The coach will give the swimmer and parent a break down of what they observed and if the swimmer is qualified they can join the team if the swimmer needs to work on some techniques the coach will explain what they think is needed to prepare the swimmer. To tryout for the winter season you must join from September - October, for the summer season you must join from April - May.
Meets: Swim meets are generally held on Saturdays and begin in the morning and are over around noon. We compete all over the state from Enid to Ardmore and Weatherford to Shawnee. Meets are included in your fees with an occasional meet that costs $5, these meets usually include heat prizes and goodie bags.
State Competition: At the end of each season we have a statewide competition where all the Y's that are in the league compete at one meet. This meet has several hundred kids and has a competitive atmosphere, this meet also lasts the full day due to the amount of swimmers.
Suits & Equipment: We do not require a team uniform but do promote having one to help have the team spirit, uniforms are selected at the beginning of the year and you will be provided information on where to purchase the suit. A team swim cap is provided at the beginning of the season. Goggles are an important part of swimming and you will need to purchase them prior to swimming. All other equipment needed for practice is provided by the YMCA.
Cost: There is a seasonal $15 league fee that is charged for the winter and summer season, this pays for the swimmers team cap as well as registers them with the state league. There is a $35 per month fee for each swimmer, all swimmers must be members of the YMCA.
Scholarships: The YMCA has a policy to not turn anyone away for financial reason, we have an annual Strong Kids campaign that raises money to help people who may need support. If you would like to apply for a scholarship please stop by the front desk and ask for a scholarship form or if you would like to donate please click on the donation link. We are a not for profit organization and all donations are tax deductible.
